A Cassette of Grim Demos

A Cassette of Grim Demos is a collection of songs written in the voice of Meeks, a character from the play “One Chord Short of a Pop Song.”

Meeks is a songwriter with very little interest in melody, harmony, and general coherence, but he does have a soft spot for a good pop song. This collection of demos is his attempt at Pop music, but the whole thing goes horrible awry, and he ends up with a collection of songs about depression, drugs, evil forests, and cats eating his corpse.

Each song was written in about an hour with limited takes before recording.

“One Chord Short of a Pop Song” is part of a night of short plays called “Old Mixtapes, Joyful Noises, and Songs about Songs” which will be presented live for free at Von wine bar on October 26th at 8pm. Von is located at 3 Bleecker Street NYC.

Meeks will be adding songs to this demo all month.

I woke in the morning cried in the morning got drunk in the morning again I can’t bare first light after such a dark night I go chasing the darkness again I got pills in cupboards I got pills on counters I got pills in bottle on tables I got all these doctors writing prescriptions who love me as Cain sure loved Abel I rose again at noon it was ten hours to soon I pulled the covers right over my head I share my bed with cats and with books And every dumb thing that I’ve said I got books in cupboards I got books on counters I got books that’ll never get read I got all these kittens to scratch what needs itching and eat up their fill when I’m dead Yes, they’ll eat up my fill when I’m dead After a life of pulling’ on threads They'll eat up their fill when I'm dead

Around a slowly spinning planet down a long and narrow road Hit is off) everywhere my heart has led me has gone and left me in the cold There’s a tree that don’t grow straight It’s branches will never reach the light and the birds that do perch there They are a terrible sight. Wicked smiles and swirls in the knots and the skin they can find you boy they know where you been I’ve got troubles in my heart like a face over the water You know the troubles I got Make the lord start to shiver We all tremble, we all shake As the planet spins around we bend but we don’t break We hold tightly to the ground Wicked smiles and swirls in the knots and the skin they can find you boy they know where you been

Somedays, you gotta just tumble down. Gotta be the goddamn saddest clown Else you may find, you are seethin’ with hate The bird that can’t fly ends up on a plate I measure my life in salt shakes and cold shivers I never cared for my heart but I grieved for my liver I pour from a bottle of ice-cold resentment Into a shot glass of grim assessment I am the face at the bottom of a glass I am the drunk at your midnight mass I swear and spit and I cross myself I drink to forget and I drink to your health I measure my life in salt shakes and cold shivers I never cared for my heart but I grieved for my liver I pour from a bottle of ice-cold resentment Into a shot glass of grim assessment
