Never Saw the Ocean
02:55

He said he ain’t never seen the ocean
So he didn’t earn his tattoo
of a swallow, a mark of devotion
and that’s why he hid it from view
It’s got feathers of blue held in lines of deep red
For the sky and for all that he bled
But he never rose, more than a foot off the ground
and his blood was the dust all around
Goddamn these lonely aspirations
that fill you with dreams but no will
to cross people and borders
to get what you oughta
to die without drinkin’ your fill
We sing songs of places and faces
that we miss but we’ve never known
when we go we don’t leave no traces
we’re not even here when we’re home
And that tattoo is more like a mark now
A curse placed by God on his back
You gotta suffer for each broken vow
‘Cause God never cut us no slack
Goddamn these lonely aspirations
that fill you with dreams but no will
you get lost in the desert
where there’s no water, just dirt
you choke tryin’ to drink up your fill

There Will Be an Answer
02:49
|
|||
Tell me love, have I earned it yet?
Will you call me babe or call in the debt?
The first time you held me, it felt like a threat
But that wasn’t you, it’s just what I expect
When we met that night, I have to confess
I was hoping for more but settling for less
And your fingers found the number for “Unsatisfied”
and I answered that I am “unsatisfied, too”
Tell me love, was I too clever, did the light in my eye
Just cover up my bruise?
I close my hands around an empty glass
I’m sending signals, and you’re making a pass
My heart beat and it felt like a crash
Leanin’ on the juke box ‘till we run outta cash
And it’s the end of the night, I have to confess
I played it cool but I’m a fucking mess
And my fingers found the number for “Androgenous”
And I ask you baby is this us?
And tell me love, am I a fool
If you’re my mirror, why are you so cruel?

Rise Again
03:30

|

There was a moment
The sun on your face
a faraway place
Some distant land
I felt a stillness
a sense of relief
Perfectly brief
and built upon sand
But now I’m older
And everything hurts
What I use to subvert
Now helps me to stand
And I am weaker
but now I know my place
and every line on my face
was from my own hand
and what can I say
to a world that’s getting further away
I think I’ll be back again some day
I think it’ll all come round again
I think I might be ready then
and what can I say
I’m getting stronger each and every day
What’s holding me down is falling away
I think I’m learning how to rise again
It’s not a question of if but of when
I had a vison
That I don’t understand
About what makes a man
And the heavy cost
And so I grew up
Not knowing where I fit
But I wouldn’t submit
At my lowest point
But now I’m bolder
And I’m fine with the dirt
And the blood on my shirt
And the scars on my wrist
They tell a story
Fears that can’t be named
And I feel no shame
It’s enough to exist
